What Causes Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune reaction in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells (beta cells) in the pancreas. The exact triggers of this autoimmune response are not known, but genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role.

Type 2 diabetes is primarily caused by a combination of insulin resistance and insufficient insulin production. Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin, which is often caused by obesity, physical inactivity, and a diet high in processed foods and sugar. Over time, the pancreas may become unable to produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels in the normal range.

Other factors that can increase the risk of developing diabetes include:

  • Family history of diabetes
  • Age (risk increases with age)
  • Ethnicity (some ethnic groups, such as African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans, are at higher risk)
  • Gestational diabetes during pregnancy
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Smoking

Types of Diabetes

Type 1
Diabetes

This is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. As a result, the body is unable to produce insulin, which is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. People with type 1 diabetes require daily insulin injections to survive.

Type 2
Diabetes

This is the most common type of diabetes, accounting for about 90% of all cases. In type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin, and the pancreas may not be able to produce enough insulin to overcome this resistance. Type 2 diabetes can often be managed through lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, and medications.

Gestational
Diabetes

This type of diabetes occurs during pregnancy, usually in the second or third trimester. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make it harder for the body to use insulin effectively, leading to high blood sugar levels. Gestational diabetes typically goes away after the baby is born, but it can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes in both the mother and the child.

Treatment

The treatment of diabetes is focused on managing sugar levels through diet and exercise and curing the root cause of its occurrence.

Cure

Diabetes is a lifestyle disorder and can be effectively cured if the personnel focus on adopting a healthy lifestyle, but only lifestyle changes cannot cure diabetes alone.

In most cases, the inability of cells to either produce or respond to insulin is hindered, causing the sugar levels to rise in someone’s bloodstream. An ideal treatment that focuses on boosting the ability of the pancreas to produce insulin and reduce the resistance of cells towards insulin can help achieve a cure.

However, conventional treatments only help to drain out the excess sugar from the blood, causing them to pursue the treatment lifelong. Ayurvedic treatment methods are designed to cure the cause of high glucose levels. Ayurveda helps the pancreas heal or reduce insulin resistance. In both cases, ayurveda cures diabetes from its roots.

Diet

Along with the treatment of diabetes, a healthy diet works as a key to opening the door to quick relief from the disease. If the patient did not focus on managing the sugar levels by themselves, the body would not recover from the disease as it would be struggling from the complications of high sugar in the blood.

A patient should choose a diet that can help their body recover from the very first day. However, both the treatment and the diet should be taken by consulting a doctor, as the severity of the case decides what should be the ideal diet plan for the individual.
